Leaving Bolzano and passing the roads to the Costalunga and Nigra passes, you enter a newly-built tunnel inside which the road forks. Taking the left fork, the two tunnels then cross (like a pair of crossed fingers) and you emerge to the right and above the main road, and climbing steeply. The climb to the village of Siusi is very long and, at times, very steep. Shortly after this there is an option of turning right to climb over Siusi Alp.
Both roads arrive, without much descending, at the upper section of the main road through Val Gardena, which leads shortly to Passo di Gardena and the magnificent Sella Ring
