Chartreuse

We crossed this attractive and dramatic area in wet, cloudy conditions, so we saw very little of the best scenery - all we saw was forest, the high rocky peaks were hidden in cloud.

The upper photo is the Col de Porte, 1326m, densely wooded more or less throughout on the route we took up which was the most westerly of several possibilities.
The Col de Coq (1431) which enters the Chartreuse from the east, is probably the better and more scenic way in from the Grenoble area.
From the summit of Col de Porte a side road climbs to about 1660m with good views.

The Col du Granier, 1139m, further north on the same route, looked more open and interesting, but we weren't able to cross this one due to major road works.

Instead we went along the Gorges du Guiers Vif (2nd photo) which was easily the most attractive road out of the few we tried in this area, one of two parallel gorge roads and an easy and scenic climb from the west.

We obviously didn't see the Chartreuse at its best - some better pictures of this dramatic area are here.
