There could not be a more dramatic gateway to the Dolomites than this pass.

On the south side, a sharp climb almost from sea level leads straight into a notch in a high cliff.
At the top the pass becomes so narrow that the hairpin bends themselves are enclosed in short dark tunnels on each side of the gorge. Good cycle lights are a very desirable thing on this pass. Some of the tunnel mouths are just visible in the background of this photograph, a fine example of flamboyant Italian engineering.
